The Jessica Numbers

By Evangeline Jennings

Last week someone showed me this thing called LitReactor and a competition they were running for crime-y short stories. Challenge accepted.

This weekend I bashed out a story called The Jessica Numbers and yesterday I threw it at the LitReactor wall to see if anyone slapped mayonnaise on it. Or possibly saluted. Here’s the blurb.

In a South London tower block, plans are being made for Jessica.

She’s only fourteen but she’s the best looking girl in her building and the local gang plans to pimp her out. They don’t care how old she is or if they damage the goods.

Zena has a plan of her own. She’s going to save her friend, no matter the cost.

One way or another it will end tonight.

It’s less than 5000 words, a quick read, and pretty decent if you like my no frills noir kind of shit. And you can download it for free.

What do you have to lose?

Despite the story’s title, this is the song that would play over the end credits.
